I called and they said there were sites available so just show up. I tried to make a reservation a couple days in advance but the reservation period ends 5 days before your arrival date. Admission to the Ghost Town is included in the camping fee. We stayed in the A loop circle pull-through with full hookups. Gas stations and two eateries in nearby Yermo, otherwise Barstow is 20 minutes and has more options. Having the neighbor's fire ring under our window (literally) is miserable.Īs much as we love getting Jeep out to play in the dirt in this fun area, we wouldn't stay here again unless they take the time and resources to make the sites level. Some of the sewer connections are elevated which is a challenge for those with hoses that are very low - flushing uphill is never a good plan.Īt over $40/night I expect to be able to get our rig level. Others had theirs off the ground by several inches. It was impossible to get level without taking tires off the ground which we don't do. Spaces here are very small and VERY sloped. There is also a strange amphitheater thingy next to the building that dozens of kids chose to play on rather than enjoying the acres of open desert around the corner. The sites are in a loop around the large and well-maintained restroom/showerhouse. We stayed in the non-ATV loop so this review applies only to that area. An information board with self check in for after hours in the large lot just past the gate would help a lot. Self serve information at information boards would have helped. The commercial endeavors there are better maintained. I think some of the artifacts there could use a lot of care in order to preserve them. The premium sites are described pretty accurately in the reports before me. He did stop at the camp site much later to collect our camping fee. He was courteous and very helpful and directed us to the dinner just outside the park. There is a gate that could have been closed at 5PM as vehicles were arriving steadily. We drove up to calico to find a ranger who said he would be around later that evening but was trying to close the ghost town down for the day. A loop has full hookups, one apparently has electricity only, and one is dry camping. I drove to get some information and found two other units that had arrived shortly before me looking for any park representative. Not sure if this is a British thing – this whole fascination with the Wild Wild West as Ed and his friend also seemed really into the ghost town but I didn’t overthink it at this point. We arrived at the gate just before 4PM. Just as we were leaving, I spotted Ed Westwick (Chuck Bass of Gossip Girl) – who’s actually British in real life arriving with his friends! I also imagine this is a fun place to take kids to (make of that what you will about me and my friend’s mental ages) but what I didn’t expect is that it’s a place to bump into celebrities in! We were all semi-nursing hangovers from Vegas but that didn’t stop us from horsing around. Okay, the ghost town is not necessarily the most exciting place in the world but it’s great to visit when you have friends with you – especially the kind of friends that can turn even a trip to the dentist into the most exciting trip and I think this is why I really enjoyed it here and have fond memories of the place. Some parts of it have been made to look more ‘Western’ than it originally was but Calico itself was a genuine mining town.įaith restored that at the very least in some part it was a (partial) representation of history, we proceeded through the town to explore what else it had to offer. I went back on the ‘inter-webs’ and found out that the ghost town as it stands is a restoration of what it looked like back in its heyday. …or at least that’s what we thought when we made a decision to go there.Īfter about 30 minutes of walking around and checking out the shops, it suddenly dawned on me that things in this ghost town seemed just a little bit too shiny and a tad too new. Thing is, there wasn’t really much to see and then one of our friends found something on Google about Calico Ghost Town and we figured we’d stop there.įor those who aren’t as familiar with Ghost Towns, these are not towns where Ghosts exclusively live □ (Hehehe!) but instead, these are old towns that used to be bustling with activity and are now just a shell of its old self as people don’t live there anymore… On the drive to Hollywood after 3 days in Las Vegas (which was so much fun but more of that in another post soon), my friends and I figure we might as well break up the journey with a stop somewhere. Disclaimer: This trip to Calico was another impromptu stop on the trip (albeit a rather nice one)!
